Adirondack Bigfoot

The Adirondack Bigfoot: Do You Believe?

When our guests gather around a nighttime campfire at Cramer’s Point Lake Breeze, old stories about strange happenings in the deep woods are heard quite often. It’s no surprise that many of these tales involve the legend of the Adirondack Bigfoot.

Whether you’re a diehard believer or a skeptic, there’s no denying that Bigfoot has become a regional phenomenon. Local festivals, TV researchers combing the woods, and Bigfoot sightings being reported throughout the Adirondacks make this big, hairy creature seem larger than life.

Why Does Bigfoot “Live” in the Adirondacks?

None of the legends mention Bigfoot skiing, camping, boating, or doing the polka at Oktoberfest in Lake George. So why the Adirondacks? Well, if you were a Bigfoot, the 6.1-million-acre Adirondack Park would be the perfect place to call home. It’s an ideal location with diverse wildlife, thick forest, and rugged terrain, making it easy to keep a low profile. If you think about it, the Adirondack natural beauty Bigfoot likes also brings vacationers to Lake George every year.

Hotspots and Reported Sightings

When Bigfoot sightings are reported, witnesses usually report seeing large, hairy figures walking on two feet, loud howls, and even bad smells. Some people have also had large rocks or tree branches thrown at them.

While sightings have occurred throughout the Adirondacks, the hotspot is in Washington County.  The most famous encounter happened in August of 1976 in the town of Whitehall.  A group of teenage boys reported seeing a Bigfoot and when local law enforcement arrived, they too saw the creature. Giant footprints were also found near the sighting location.

More recently, there was a Bigfoot sighting in 1996 at Pine Pond in Whitehall, and in October of 2022, an encounter was reported in Gabriels, near Paul Smith’s College. So far, we haven’t had any sightings here at Cramer’s Point Lake Breeze, but our guests do have a great view of the Adirondacks, so you never know.

Have Some Bigfoot Fun – Let Loose & Howl

If you’re a Bigfoot enthusiast or just looking for something fun to do, the Whitehall Sasquatch Festival & Calling Contest is the place to be in September. It’s a quick, scenic drive from Cramer’s Point to Skenesborough Park in Whitehall (keep your eyes open!). You can enjoy food and drink from local vendors, meet Bigfoot researchers, listen to live music, and more. It’s a family and pet-friendly event with free admission. The festival wraps up with the Sasquatch calling contest, so don’t leave too early.
